Receiving and passing statistics

I thought it would be apropos to rant about football as the new season kicked off this week. I think it is about time that the rules are changed about how receiving and passing statistics are calculated. The quarterback should not get credit for yards gained after the catch. The receiving and passing statistics should be broken down into 3 separate categories:
  • Receiving yards - the actual yardage from the line of scrimmage to the spot of the catch
  • Passing yards - same as above
  • Post-catch yards - the yardage from the spot of the catch to the spot of the downed ball
Of course, this will probably never happen. Although, these new statistics for the current receivers and quarterbacks could be compared to the old-timers by adding the two categories together. I still don't think it will happen.
